Years
back, tapemachines(Studer, Ampex, Telefunken were a standard
in every recording studios. Hitting the tape a bit(overloading)
was a technique used to induce tape distortion and as a result
a warm and "tape" sound called tape compression.
In most studios, it has been replaced by some hardware emulators
or digital plug-ins, but till now, none has been able to perfectly
reproduce the true "Tape" sound. Maintenance of
tape machines is rather expensive and their manipulation is
time-consuming, which explain a higher price, though, results
are often much better, more alive and more vibey!!! Tapes
also add a bit of noise/tape hiss on recordings which is to
take into consideration. It depends on the result wanted(digital
clean/more vintage): When it suits well all kind of high RMS
average music, it tend to be more audible in more subtle and
RMS-conservative genre, but it generally perfectly suits todays'
digital mixes. In my opinion, it sweetens the sound in a very
desirable way but is not always the key!!!
Ask
me if you don't know what would be the best option for your
project. Sometimes, one will work better than the other, depending
on the material source.
